- Supporting Pupils at School with Medical Conditions
The Childrens and Families Act 2014, enacted a duty on governing bodies of maintained schools, proprietors of academies and management committees of PRU’s to make arrangements for supporting pupils at their school with medical conditions.
Consequently, the DfE reviewed and revised their guidance on managing medicines resulting in the production of the ‘Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs’ document. This came into effect on the 1 September 2014 and was further updated in December 2015. It replaces the previous ‘Managing Medicines in Early Years Settings’ document of 2005 used by education premises.
The aim of the statutory guidance is to ensure that all children with medical conditions, in terms of both physical and mental health, are properly supported in school so that they can play a full and active role in school life, remain healthy and achieve their academic potential.
The Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions webpage is intended to support schools in their compliance with the statutory guidance by providing copies of the DfE guidance itself and templates/links to support schools in developing their approach to the requirements.
