    • With Keynote, Frances Akinde: What is an Ally? What is Allyship?

Frances joined Hampshire Improvement and Advisory Service (HIAS) in 2023, taking up the post of HIAS Special Needs Inspector/Adviser. Frances brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role, having previously worked as a headteacher of a special secondary school for learners aged 11-19 with autism and associated difficulties, and as a qualified special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCo).

Frances’ commitment to promoting inclusivity and addressing educational inequities extends beyond HIAS. Her passion for advocacy has led her to actively participate in national campaigns, including on intersectionality, specifically the intersection of race and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). In January 2023, Frances co-launched the BAMEed SEND hub as part of the BAMEed Network; a dynamic network that strives to foster diversity and tackle racial disparities in the field of education.

      Conference Aims:

      • To consider and reflect on the role of an actionable ally and how we can promote allyship across the school.
      • Explore and share opportunities for Meaningful Pupil Voice and Participation in developing and enhancing a sense of Belonging across the school community.
      • To introduce the work of the Hampshire Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) and their role in promoting the Equality Act, challenging discrimination and prejudice and encouraging positive attitudes towards difference.
      • Showcase the work of current EARA schools across the county led by children and young people.
